After more than 150 years of absence, legal distillation returned to the island of Arran in 1995, when the Isle of Arran Distillery distilled the first drops at. 14.29 on June 29, 1995.
The last legal distillery at Arran closed in 1836. The unusual beautiful distillery Arran is located in the village of Lochranza on the northwest tip of Arran, and the distillery remains the only one on the island. The whiskey from the distiller ripens on the distiller's own ground in some very unique surroundings.
The whiskey is stored on sherry and bourbon casks. The climate on Arran accelerates maturation, and the Arran whiskey is considered the fastest developing in all of Scotland. This was reportedly due to the warm Gulf Stream passing through the distillery’s warehouses. The water for the distillery comes from the Loch na Davie source, which is the purest natural source in all of Scotland.
